Apostille vs. Embassy legalisation for Thailand

The two routes look alike on paper and cost very different amounts of time. One ends with a single certificate that any Hague state takes at face value. The other keeps the older habit of asking the receiving country to sign off itself, through its mission here in Italy. Thailand still uses the second one, so plan for two stamps rather than one.

Thailand's Hague status & what it means

Signing a treaty and running on it are separate events. Thailand has joined, but the Convention only takes effect there on 28 February 2027, so nothing about today's paperwork has moved. A file leaving Turin this month is judged by the old rule. A file leaving after that date is judged by the new one, and the consular stop simply falls out of the chain.

The Turin → Thailand route step by step

Work backwards from your Thai deadline. Order or collect the original first, since the whole chain hangs on one live signature. Book the Prefettura or Procura stamp next; that is the quick half, and the office is chosen by who signed the paper. Then leave open-ended time for the consular seal, which is booked, priced and scheduled by the destination's own staff rather than by us.

Cost & timing for this route

Only one figure is fixed in advance: the €16 tax stamp Italy puts on each document, with some records exempt. The consular half carries its own official fee, set by the destination, and it moves with the destination's calendar. Because of that, two files sent on the same morning can finish a week apart. Build slack into the plan instead of one tight date.

Points that belong to Thailand alone

Thai is written in its own script, so the office reading your file will often work from a translation rather than from the Italian page. Keep that translation with the original through the whole chain, because a seal applies to the bundle it was placed on. Watch the spelling of names as well: a name carried from Thai script into Latin letters can be written more than one way, and every page in the file should use the same one.
