Extract or certificate: pick the right one

Two different papers describe the same marriage. The certificato di matrimonio states that the marriage happened; the estratto per riassunto dell'atto di matrimonio copies out the register entry with any later notes on it. Those notes carry separations, divorces and the couple's property regime. Read the letter from abroad, then decide how to legalize a Marriage Certificate in the form your reader named.

Visa offices nearly always want the extract, because it shows whether the marriage is still standing. A pension fund or an inheritance file often wants the same. If your letter simply says marriage certificate, ask which of the two it means. The extract costs no more and tells the fuller story, so it is the safer order.

Ordering it from the town hall

Both papers come from the ufficio di stato civile of the Comune where the marriage was recorded. That is the town hall of the wedding, not of your home today, and a wedding held abroad appears in Rome only once it has been transcribed here. Ask the clerk to confirm the entry exists before you pay for anything.

Ask for a fresh print rather than sending the copy from your wedding folder. Register papers are read as a snapshot, and a sheet from years ago says nothing about the notes added since. Embassy legalization of a Marriage Certificate in Rome is refused often enough on age alone to make the reprint worth its small fee.

The Prefettura, then the mission

A town-hall paper is an administrative one, so it goes to the Prefettura for the state stamp. The clerk there checks the registrar's signature against the specimens on file. Court and notarial papers go elsewhere, to the Procura della Repubblica, which is why a divorce ruling and a marriage extract take different doors.

Consular legalization of a Marriage Certificate in Italy follows: the destination's embassy or consulate here adds the closing seal. Embassy attestation of a Marriage Certificate in Rome is by appointment at most missions. Take both passports if the file names both spouses. Some desks want a copy of a residence card as well.

Fee and timing

The state's part costs a €16 tax stamp (marca da bollo), and the mission sets its own consular fee. Allow 10–15 business days for the chain, or 3–5 business days where the express route exists. Visa deadlines rarely move, so start at the town hall on the day you learn the file is wanted.

Where marriage files fail

Names cause most refusals. A wife who kept her own surname in Italy but appears under her husband's abroad will not match. A middle name missing from the register entry reads as a different person altogether. Check both spellings at the counter. You can legalize a Marriage Certificate in Rome in one attempt when the sheets agree with the passports.

Ask one question before the first fee. Whether the destination needs the consular seal turns on its own rules, and the office that will read your marriage papers is the only one that can say. Send a short written request and keep the answer. It may point you to a single-step certification and save a whole stage.
