Senegal since 2023
Senegal joined the Hague Apostille Convention in 2023, and that date settles the shape of the whole job. An apostille for Senegal is the correct and sufficient mark, so there is no second desk holding the file after the British one has acted. Document legalisation for Senegal therefore means one application, one charge and one thing to wait for.
One mark, two shapes
The Legalisation Office is the single body that issues United Kingdom apostilles, and it does so in more than one form: by post, and as a UK e-Apostille. Both are the same act of certification by the same office. What changes is what you end up holding at the end — a sheet that has physically travelled, or a record issued without one.
Choosing between a sheet and a file
Start from the person who will read the document, not from the office that issues it. If they need to place something in a folder or hand it across a counter, the postal certificate gives them exactly that. If the paper is going to be read on a screen at the far end, the electronic form spares the file a journey through two postal systems.
The choice also changes what can go wrong. A sheet in transit can be delayed or lost, which is why an apostille issued in Coventry for use in Senegal should be built on a fresh certified copy rather than the certificate you keep at home. An electronic record has no envelope to lose, though it does need somebody at the other end able to open it.
What the printed rates cover
Two figures are published: £45 / document for standard postal work and £40 / document for the next-day line, the second of which is open to registered businesses. Both attach to each document rather than to a batch, so five papers cost five times over. Pace follows the same split — the next-day line moves quickly, and the ordinary postal service moves at the speed of the post.
