Frequently Asked Questions

Degree Certificate apostille FAQ

Where do I get a degree certificate apostille in Belfast?

Degree certificate apostilles for anywhere in the UK come from The Legalisation Office (Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office), located in Milton Keynes. Although based in England, they process requests by post from all over the country, including Northern Ireland. To start, you must have your university degree certificate officially certified before it can be apostilled. The processing time varies depending on which service you choose. Your documents will be posted back to your specified address once the apostille is complete.

What makes a degree certificate eligible for an apostille?

The certificate must be an original or a freshly issued certified copy from the awarding university. Photocopies or scans without proper certification will be rejected. The university's official stamp and signature must be clearly visible on the document. If your degree is from outside the UK, additional steps may be necessary before it qualifies for the UK apostille process.

Does my degree certificate need an official before the apostille?

The Legalisation Office requires verification that the certificate's signature matches their records. For UK degrees, this means getting it certified by a solicitor or a notary public who can vouch for the authenticity. If your university is unable to provide a suitable certified copy, you will need to seek a local notary in Belfast. Remember that the office cannot accept loose copies.

Can I speed up the apostille process?

The standard service processes applications by post within 25 working days once received. For faster handling, registered businesses can access a next-day service. Note that mailing times in and out of Milton Keynes will add to the total turnaround. The fastest option would be to use a qualified professional service that secures priority processing.

What should I do if my certificate isn't in English?

Your document will likely need a certified translation before getting the apostille. The translation service should provide both the original text and the English version side by side, with the translator's credentials included. Some authorities require the apostille to go on the translation rather than the original certificate – check with the receiving organisation first. The important point is that the translation must be complete and match every detail exactly.

What is the most common reason for rejection?

Incomplete certification causes most problems. Verify that the signed statement includes your name exactly as it appears on the document. Missing university stamps, unclear signatures, or torn edges can all lead to delays or rejections. Always double-check that you have enclosed the correct supporting materials before sending your application to the Legalisation Office.
